RES has assisted Hexicon to achieve its recent submission of a scoping report for the Dounreay Trì floating wind demonstration project by providing an array of development services.
Since October 2014, RES has provided site selection, development, wind analysis and metocean services in support of the project.
Jim Sandon, COO Offshore at RES commented: “RES has been successfully providing end-to-end services for the offshore wind energy market for over 10 years and we have a strong track record of project delivery. It is very rewarding to see our experience help innovators like Hexicon take the first, critical steps towards demonstrating their technology in real-world conditions.”
Marcus Thor, Project Director said: “RES have helped drive our project forward. The submission of the scoping report marks the start of the planning process for Dounreay Tri. Reaching this first milestone is testament to RES’ professionalism, knowledge and credibility.”
The scoping report is now at the pre-application stage with Marine Scotland and the project is planned to be operational by the summer of 2018.

Hexicon is a Swedish Design and Engineering company developing floating multi-turbine platforms. Its patented technology enables the platform to align with the wind direction, maximising energy yield from free wind for its turbines. This enables efficient harvesting of the best offshore energy resources further offshore in deeper waters.

Dounreay Trì is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created by Hexicon for the sole purpose of developing, financing, constructing and demonstrating a single semi-submersible platform and two wind turbines with an installed capacity of 8 to 16 megawatts (MW), approximately 6 km off Dounreay, Caithness. The project shall further consist of a single export cable to bring the power to shore at, or near, SandsideBay, and the associated onshore electrical infrastructure to connect the project at, or near, the existing substation at Dounreay.
