The Crown Estate today announced that First Flight Wind has been selected to develop an offshore wind farm off the south east coast of County Down, Northern Ireland.
The First Flight Wind consortium, established specifically to develop this offshore wind energy project, comprises RES, B9 Energy and DONG Energy.
Subject to obtaining all necessary consents from the Department of Environment and the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment (DETI), the project could supply up to 600MW of renewable energy by 2020.
Chris Morgan, CEO of RES Offshore,
"This is an important project for RES and we are delighted to be a member of the consortium selected to develop this major new project.
"RES has been developing and building wind farms in Northern Ireland since 1994 and this project will provide us with the opportunity to grow our offshore wind activities alongside our established NI and ROI onshore wind business. In the broader context, this project will continue to support RES Offshore's investment in skills and resources and, in the long term, will provide opportunities for investment in a very significant operating asset."
A community consultation programme will be launched on the 24th October, when the First Flight Wind website www.firstflightwind.com will go live, providing further information about the project.
This is a further comment from Chris Morgan regarding RES activity in offshore wind in light of David Cameron's celebration of the growth of the UK's offshore wind and tidal capability:
"RES has over 30 years experience in the UK wind energy sector and is now one of the world's leading independent renewable energy companies. To date we have secured planning permission to produce over 350MW of offshore wind capacity in the UK. Our business has been a leader since the inception of offshore wind in the UK in the mid 1990s. We were one of the first companies to be developing sites in UK coastal waters. We are involved because we believe that, with sufficient investment, offshore wind will play an important role in delivering UK electricity and that renewable technologies will bring a range of local and national benefits including energy security, price stability, investment and jobs.
Through our dedicated RES Offshore division of over 100 specialist professionals, we have provided development, engineering, construction and operations support to a diverse set of utilities and contractors involved in offshore wind, wave and tidal stream. We will continue to grow our resources and capabilities to enable the UK to achieve its low carbon objectives, provide a secure source of energy and maximise the industrial opportunities for the UK in the offshore, marine and tidal sectors."
